Knocked Out

We've been passing bugs around our house ever since Christmas so now I've been sick in bed since Sunday evening! Needless to say, there hasn't been too much fitness going on this week but I hope to be back to it next week.

Stay healthy and well!

Get well soon!

When you're up and running again, I have a question. I have a person that attends my Step and BOSU classes that asked for exercises for a "sore knee". She had it from before and is overweight and knows that is adding to the strain. I suggested that she not use a step and stay away from any hi impact exercises, etc. Since the BOSU has less impact than a step, would you advise her to continue the BOSU class? She and her friend have been "gung ho" since the new year and picking up lots of classes. I have also suggested that she cut back a little, but I don't think she's going to. I just wanted your opinion on it if you get a second. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks ~

Hi Shannon!

I think it depends on why her knee is sore.

It sounds like it may be a bit of overuse syndrome... too much, too fast. Performing her exercises on the BOSU Ball will definitely help reduce impact but I would strongly suggest that she switch to activities that will give her knee a break until it feels better and then to start back up more carefully.

However, if it's a case of "weak knees", standing exercises on top of a BOSU Ball are wonderful for developing strength in the knees. If she wants to continue exercising, I would suggest practicing movements like slow squats, single leg balance, single leg bend and reach, and static lunges. I'd leave out any dynamic, ballistic movements that involve any jumping, bouncing or major stepping until that knee feels better.

The best advice is to use common sense. Pain is the body's way of sending us messages... it's usually a good idea to listen!
